Simon Says Stamp April 2018 Card of the Month Kit – Beautiful Day

Oh boy am I dragging this morning!  I think it’s the continuing dreary weather here in Michigan and also the news that it will apparently be a snowy Easter holiday here. 😦  Not unusual for this area really but still not something to look forward to!  Oh well, a good excuse to spend more time indoors crafting, right??

Today I have a card to share that I created using the contents of the fabulous Simon Says Stamp April 2018 monthly card making kit!  This kit is so cool!  Unfortunately at the moment it is sold out, but fingers crossed they will have more maybe???  Here is a link to the kit so you can find out if you will be able to get it:  Simon Says Stamp April 2018 Monthly Card Kit

Here is the card I created:

Love, love, love the butterflies in this kit!  The stamp set is so nice, a big 6 x 8 set with so many images that can be used a zillion ways!  You also get a butterfly stencil, twelve single sided sheets of the Lawn Fawn “Really Rainbow” 6 x 6 papers, Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Inks in Squeezed Lemonade and Mermaid Lagoon, Tim Holtz Ranger Distress Blending Brush, 1 sheet of foil, 2 SSS envelopes, and a bunch of SSS cardstock!

I had never used the Oxide Distress inks, so I was anxious to try them out.  I will say they blend beautifully, though I am not a big fan of the distress brush included in the kit.  I found it difficult to use and prefer the ink blending tools or a sponge, but that’s just a personal preference.  I do like the retractable case it comes in which is convenient.  I used a sponge to ink a background with the two oxide inks.  I was trying to end up with a bright sunny sky, fading into blue then into green to represent grass.  I then added some water to give it more interest.  I do like how it turned out!  I can’t wait to get more of the oxide inks! (I did end up with one big “blotch” but that’s okay because we will soon cover that up!)

I used the paper that came in the kit for my background, so this will work on regular paper as long as you don’t get it super wet.  I have heard that Bristol Smooth cardstock is the best to use with this though.

For my butterflies I stamped all the images in Lawn Fawn Jet Black Ink onto smooth white cardstock.

I stamped some of the smaller butterflies in the set with the oxide inks, but didn’t end up using them on my card.  There are no dies with this kit so I had to fussy cut the butterflies out.

I used my Copics to color the images, I ended up not using the first largest butterfly because I didn’t like my coloring on that one.  Here are the colors I used:  BV00, BV02, YG03, YG11, BOO, BG01, C3, BG23, Y00, G00

Originally I planed to use the striped paper from the Lawn Fawn Really Rainbow 6 x 6 Petite Paper Pack but changed my mind and used the lavender sheet instead.  But I did take my color inspirations from the first four stripes.  (these papers are in the kit but if you want the whole pack you can buy it separately!)

My card base is Neenah Solar White 110 lb Cardstock and measures 11 x 4 1/4, scored at 5 1/2.  The lavender piece is cut at 5 1/8 x 3 7/8, with the inked background piece trimmed to 5 x 3 3/4.  I wanted a bit of definition between the sponged piece and the inked background so I used one of my Copics along the edge to create a very thin “shadow” (sorry I cannot remember which marker it was, but a blue color)

I then realized I needed a “base” for my butterflies to sit on so I cut a 1 inch wide strip to fit across the lower portion of the card showing those 4 stripes whose colors I used on on the butterflies.  I adhered the butterflies across the strip, layering the leaf images beneath them.

For the sentiment I chose “Keep Smiling”  from the stamp set.  I stamped this with Versamark Clear Ink and embossed it using Lawn Fawn White Embossing Powder

I couldn’t resist adding some Glossy Accents to the butterflies and dotted here and there around the card.  Finally to finish I used my Corner Chomper to round the corners of the base of the card.

Here’s another look at the finished card:

Thank you so much for joining me today and I hope you can keep smiling despite the weather!  Warmer, brighter days are coming!

Have a great day!
